More hospital admissions for stress because of recession

More people are being admitted to hospital for stress caused by the recession and job insecurity, according to official figures. Statistics from the Health and Social Care Information Service show that the number of people hospitalised for stress is 7% higher than a year ago, and is up 47% on 2007/8 when the recession first struck.

These figures don't include the millions who visit GPs and A&E departments or who see counsellors.

Stress is now the biggest single cause of sickness in the country, affecting one in five of the working population, with a total loss of working days of about 105 million a year. Working to deadlines where failure is visible or working in an environment where there is little or no support or encouragement can be among the most stressful situations.
